Chile Releases Telesur Producer After Arbitrary Arrest During Student March Repression

Carolina Sandoval, producer of the multi-state television network teleSUR in the Republic of Chile, was released early on Saturday morning after being arbitrarily arrested for carrying out her work and covering a student march that was repressed by the Chilean government.

The producer was taken to the Third Police Station in Santiago, where she was detained without legal justification. Despite being released, Carolina Sandoval must appear in court.
On the fact, the president of teleSUR, Patricia Villegas rejected the apprehension of the producer when the Carabineros violently dissolve the student mobilization that commemorated the eve of the young fighter’s march.
Also, the leader of the information sign demanded that the team “have all guarantees to continue working and maintain our commitment to report on what is happening. This fact does not frighten us and we denounce it.”
On the eve of a student demonstration in the capital, Chile’s Carabineros (police) used water-launchers and excessive force. Arbitrarily, he detained four minors and media personnel who reported the incident, including Sandoval.
The march aimed to commemorate of the historic youth resistance against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. This mobilization it is a symbol of the struggle against state repression and the criminalization of social protest.
